Japantown Merchants association Obon Odori

“The San Francisco Japantown Merchants Association’s Obon Odori will be held on Sunday, August 7 at the Japantown Peace Plaza at Post and Buchanan Streets. The event will feature popular singer Ayako Hosokawa, an Obon Odori at 1:30 p.m. led by Madame Michiya Hanayagi and yosakoi dancing at 2:30.

The public is invited to join in the festivities, including the Obon Odori dancing. Free dance practices for the Obon will be held on August 1 and 3 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at May’s Coffee Shop in the West Mall of the Japan Center (formerly Kintetsu Mall).

The entertainment schedule for the Obon is:

1:00 p.m. – Hanayagi Dance Group
1:15 p.m. – Ayako Hosokawa
1:30 p.m. – Obon Odori
2:30 p.m. – Yosakoi Dance

Obon is a Buddhist observance honoring the memory of one’s ancestors and those who have recently passed away. Remembering with those who have departed from our lives with joy and gratitude is a key theme in Obon as it is observed in the United States. Reflecting this spirit, all members of the community, regardless of religious affiliation, are encouraged to attend and join in the communal folk dancing, the Obon Odori.”

“OBON is a traditional event to honor and express gratitude to the spirits of our ancestors, those before us who provided us with the gift of life.

The Obon Festival is held as a celebration of the return of the spirits of our ancestors. The festival features delicious food, games, farmers market, flower market, tea ceremony demonstrations, traditional Bon Odori Dancing, and taiko drummers, musical groups, and plenty of entertainment all day.

Entertainment – The 2011 entertainment lineup will include happyfunsmile, Local Mojo, hereandnow, TAIKOPROJECT and many others.
